Black Ice

Shine like a star in Katie Georgiou's glamorous necklace, bracelet, and earring set

Katie Georgiou

Katie Georgiou, MJ Designer

I love this look – it’s great for dressing up or dressing down. Wear it together for maximum impact or why not experiment with a shorter necklace

This project demonstrates how inexpensive pewter pendants can be transformed into elegant evening wear using a simple embellishing technique. Make each piece of jewellery by decorating the main components with flat back Swarovski crystals and combining them with elegant silver chain and shimmering grey pearls, to create a beautiful finish.

PREPARATION
Designer TIP! Use tweezers to pick up and hold the flat backs while you apply the glue. A tiny dab of adhesive on the end of a head pin is just enough to cover the reverse without the glue oozing out.
HOW TO MAKE
Necklace
  1. Embellish a 33mm pewter pendant with flat back crystals as follows: a 11mm crystal, four 6.5mm jet gems, four 4.5mm crystals and eight 3mm jet stones, by applying a tiny amount of jewellery glue to each jewel and positioning it onto the component.
  2. Using the same technique, add seven 6.5mm jet flat backs and six 4.5mm crystal gems to a 28mm x 34mm pewter pendant and embellish two 21mm x 26mm pendants each with a 6.5 jet flat back, four 4.5mm crystals and four 3mm jet stones.
  3. Once all of the components are dry, connect the two 21mm x 26mm pendants to the 33mm pendant with two 5.5mm jump rings, hooking them through the single loop of the smaller pendants and the holes that are nearest to the crystal flat backs on the larger piece.
  4. Attach the top loop of the 34mm x 28mm pendant to the bottom of the largest component using a 5.5mm jump ring. Add an octagon crystal at either side of this with another two 5.5mm jump rings.
  5. Cut 10 sections of chain about 7cm long, varying the lengths slightly to give a more edgy look. Thread a light grey pearl onto a head pin, cut the excess wire and form a loop. Make two more pins in the same way.
  6. Attach two sections of chain to a 5.5mm jump ring by the top links and add a pearl. Connect this to an end loop on the bottom of the 34mm x 28mm pendant. Repeat for every other loop and add chain sections without pearls to the loops in between.
  7. Cut 12 lengths of chain measuring about 30cm, but making four chains for the inside slightly shorter, and four for the outside slightly longer than the rest. Attach two sections of chain to each of the loops on the 21mm x 26mm pendants with 5.5mm jump rings.
  8. Hook the ends of chain in their pairs to 5.5mm jump rings. Thread three sets onto a oval jump ring and repeat for the other side of the necklace, adding a clasp to finish.
Bracelet
  1. Take five 33mm pewter pendants and embellish each with an 11mm crystal flat back, four 6.5mm crystals, plus four 4.5mm and four 3mm jet gems. Leave to dry.
  2. Link each pendant together with an oval jump ring and add an extra ring to each end of the bracelet. Attach a lobster clasp to one end and close.
  3. Thread a 12mm grey pearl onto a head pin, trim the excess wire and form a loop. Make three more pins in the same way, and attach to each of the jump rings that connect the pewter pendants.
Earrings
  1. Embellish a 21mm x 26mm pewter component as for the necklace. Leave to dry. Cut six 5cm pieces of chain, varying the lengths slightly so that they do not all look the same.
  2. Thread the top link of two pieces of chain onto a 5.5mm jump ring and attach this to one of the pewter pendant loops. Add two more double lengths in the same way and hook an earwire to the top of the component. Repeat to make a pair.
